With all the talk in Washington, DC and Trenton, NJ about our worsening economy, higher taxes, entitlements and government intervention, a few great quotes come to mind.
"In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other." Voltaire
"Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." Frederic Bastiat, French Economist (1801-1850)
While I might not agree with the politics of the author's quotes in this blog, it does show that none of what's going on today is new, nor was it unforeseen or unexpected.
Perhaps what we need to realize now is that everything comes at a cost. This something we all must remember, whether it's REALTORS® asking the government for lower mortgage rates or tax incentives, or one of the other groups lining up before Congress asking for a piece of the pie or government intervention...
"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have."
Barry Goldwater

They already have the ability to do what ever they please. it is only when the masses get tired of it and take back control and over throw the government that things completely change. Thank goodness we are not at that point.
Good quotes Laura. It does show that this is a cycle that happens in our type of society. It is just that in todays world of technology that everyone knows yesterday what is going to happen today. That is where much of the danger lies.
Laura, if we are becoming a socialist country, then I might as well move to France where I can get free health care and much better wine.
higher taxes on everyone unfortunately. I hate the way the country is turning to distribution of wealth. I have a friend who works for Jp Morgan who makes a pretty good living, but comissions may be taxed by 90% which would force him to lose his home, and put a huge financial hardship to him.
Dear Laura,
I love the Voltaire quote. Another one I like is: Those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it.." I don't remember who said that but it is oh so true.
B
Laura, I like the three quotes. It is so true in reality but the reality is few people are reasonable and everybody wants to live at the expense of others sometime in the disguise of democracy.
I would say that last quote is frighteningly true. And I think you may know why I say frightening.
Barry goldwater nailed it when he said that. I think our government is way past being able to take everything from us.
