The Press Gets a Taste of What It's Like!

news (sxc)Apparently it's not just REALTORS who have a problem with the press.  The press is having a problem with press!

It's reported today that a new public relations campaign has been launched to counter what newspaper publishers call "gloom and doom" reports of the its industry's downfall.

The PR campaign launched Monday (February 2, 2009) will include ads, commentary reports and a website.  With the kickoff yesterday an ad appearing in over 300 newspapers, including the New York Times, touts the fact that more people read about the Super Bowl than watched it.

graph (sxc)Newspaper publishers are facing some of the same problems as REALTORS...A less than robust economy, job loss and Internet competition!

Currently there are about 1.400 newspapers nationwide, down by 100 in the last ten years.

Perhaps some of those newspaper publishers should read our comments here in the Rain!  We too are tired of the "gloom and doom" reports, which seem to be the media's bread and butter!  I guess we're not alone any more.

whoo-hoo for that.  It's about time they get a taste of what they are passing out.

Do they really think "spreading a little joy" would hurt?

If we all check out Happy News everyone's day will be a little brighter!

I read it every day when I'm bummed out about the "doom and gloom" reporting!

I am guilty of being one of those people. I read about it in the newspaper the day after.... because during the SuperBowl I was showing property!!

It will be interesting to see how this campaign works out for the papers. Many of the people here have pulled all their advertising from the paper, due to a lack of return on investment.

I just canceled my home delivery of the local newspaper here in Salem. The paper consistently prints negative articles about the real estate market but doesn't mind taking our money for advertising. Our company's ad insert is over a million dollars a year. It's just crap! I'll read the news online.

Hi Laura,

Nothing's real until it is local! Case at hand! I am sure it won't change their reporting, but it is nice to see them getting some of what they have been dishging out for so may years.

Now maybe they will realize how we felt when they started their doom and gloom campaign about real estate. See how they like it.

So true. The venerable Christian Science Monitor is going all on ine. the issue becomes hwoever that the new internet version of newspapers will be less "fact" and more advertising supoprted.

Hi Laura - I think we all feel the media tends to be a bit on the negative side.  I have seen some positive reports in our local news paper about our industry and that's a move in the right direction.  The Akron Beacon Journal has featured some of the Brokers in our area and have reported on their insights into the market and the direction we're going.

Great. Hope some newspapers will learn something from it. They also should learn Code of Ethics mandatory every other year.

Hi Laura, I get annoyed with purchasing a newspaper that keeps dwindling in size and keeps going up in price.  Soon to be in cemeteries those newspaper companies!!

I hear you sister! Plus many of the papers are owned by the same huge companies. So we get less diverse news, its the same doom and gloom every time. I say make them get out there in the trenches and tell us whats really happening. Oh yeah and tell us something happy and positive once in a while!

April- I am with you they need to quit raisning the price every thirty minutes. Or give you a break for recycling the paper or something!
