I'm looking for a little advice on safeguarding my computer projects and I humbly ask for your guidance...

My computer went on an inter-galactic trip a few days ago, and I was concerned that everything would be lost. Well, she's back and good as new! Maybe even a little better.
After a very expensive clean up, she's back on planet earth and actually moving faster than I can remember. It appears that everything is intact! Whoo Hoo!
I've learned a little from this episode. Back up documents and photos! I know, I know and I should have known! But I haven't done that in years. So now I'm looking for suggestions, should I use on line accounts for this or buy the hardware and do it myself?
Any advice is appreciated...

Hi Laura:
This is a good question. I back up on CD and my old computer that I just use as storage anymore.
My only concern about using on-line storage is that, what happens if the internet based company needs to close and doesn't give you notice...
Laura...
You can get a HUGE external hard drive for about 120 dollars, and it's fast and easy, and you know where your data is at all times!
Just don't drop it! (I dropped mine and broke it!) Hope that helps.
Toula & Richard, thanks for the advice! I think I'll look into the external drive...I hope it's not too complicated!!
I use an external drive - stores everything I need. Like Richard above it cost about $120. Seems a little more than what I wanted to pay but think about all the time you would spend retrieving info if you crashed and didn't have the back up.
We do some of both....depending on what it is...I guess I would vote for CD's or an external drive that you have in your possession...if the internet goes down, the company goes under....it is all still yours...good luck !
The one thing you have to watch is when your external drive is connected to your computer and on the Internet.
Here are a few things you can do.
1. Use a MAC 99.9% of bugs and hacks are for a pc
2. Always use virus protection (I use live care from MS) Stay away from Systematic
3. Subscribe to automatic updates from MS

I have a portable hard drive that powers up off my USB port and then syncs all data I have selected for back up.
Morning Laura,
Our Broker offers on-line storage options so as to free the office computers. I use my own computer(s) for work, office and home desktop as well as tag along laptop. I use an external hard drive for storage because I share the concerns that others have stated before me, "What happens it the on-line storage source terminates their business and/or relationship!
Sorry you had this unfortunate learning experience.
I learned the hard way. Now I use an external hard drive and Norton Ghost by Symantec. I've had to restore my computer a couple of times. It's well worth the cost. It's ok to us an online service, but what happens if you can't access the Internet?
I back up manually and on line. The thought of loosing everything stresses me out!
I learned my lesson on this one as well....the hard way! Always back up data!
Laura...I am with Richard. I have an external storage for everything, and then I have the flash drives for all the common, often used things. So , some thing get backed up twice!
Get a good external HD. They are very cheap and very effective. Don't get caught without one. They are also portable.
I say get yourself an external hard drive and back it up. You can get a 500 GB one for anywhere from $50-$200 and that should be ll you need.
500 GB External Hard Drives
I have five external one terabyte hard drives hooked up to my computer. Four of them hold our music collection of over 25,000 digital files. The other one is for Backup Fridays.
It is so easy to set up Windows to do automatic backups. I firmly believe that if Mr Technology Challenged (me!) can do it, you can, too!
