The Meaning of Memorial Day

To some Memorial Day means the start of the summer season.  But Memorial Day is more than the start of a season or a day off from school.

Memorial (sxc-Jean Scheijen)Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service.  In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries.  A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.

Memorial Day and Veterans Day are often confused.  Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.

According to the Department of Verterans Affairs, "Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty."

On Memorial Day the flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon only, then raised briskly to the top of the staff until sunset, in honor of the nation’s battle heroes.

Laura - very thoughtful post and I learned something. I didn't know that you fly the flag at half-staff from sunrise until noon. We have an American flag all year round and this year I'll make sure I do it right! Have a great weekend!

Good evening, Laura. I agree with William. Most folks haven't a clue what Memorial day stands for. For most, it is just another day off at the end of the month...

We owe them all so much - taking one day to honor them is a very small thing. And yet... for most people it just means taking off for a 3 day week-end. So sad.
