Tomorrow, Thursday and for the 2 additional Thursday’s through the Labor Day 2009 weekend, ‘we don’t need no stinking badges!’
The Borough of Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island, is making a last ditch effort to attract day trippers and mainland locals to the lovely beaches of this southern Long Beach Island community.

Thursday’s will be FREE BEACH DAYS in Beach Haven! No (stinking) badges required. It’s an effort to draw beach goers to the southern end of Long Beach Island to spend money they might have spent on a badge elsewhere in the community.
Most mainland locals, me included, don’t travel far during the summer months once we cross the Route 72 Causeway to the Island. We tend to buy season beach passes in Ship Bottom, Surf City and Long Beach Township. That way we cross the bridge, park the car and we’re on the beach!
Beach Haven Commissioners are hoping these free Thursdays will not only encourage visitors to drive the Boulevard south, but give badge checkers, who are mostly college students, a needed day off.

What is your season? Do the public schools open before Labor Day? I find it interesting how different states have different opening and closing seasons for schools. In Michigan there is a state law that dictates school season, based on tourism.
Laura, I would gladly wear a badge, stinking or not, if the beach were close enough to visit. I am in awe of you right now, drive down and there it is, the beach. What a picture that is in my mindseye! Enjoy!
Cindy, public school almost always starts after Labor Day. But I don't have kids, and it's been a few (LOL) years since I was in school!
Gail, it's funny how you just start to take it for granted. I rarely go over to the Island in the summer, usually just when I have guests. The best time is the end of September, the water's still warm and the crowds are gone!
While Jersey might get some bad raps every now and then, one thing I can say for certain is that their beaches are absolutely beautiful...and they're now even more beautiful on Thursdays!
We used to vacation on Long Beach Island when I was a kid. Mistily we rented a cottage in Surf City but I fondly remember Beach Haven!

Laura - now that is something I would definitely do, on a Thursday, or anyday!
Morning Laura,
We may live in Paradise now, but we still miss the "Shore" during the summer months.
Craig, we do get a bad rap! But hey we're tough, we're from Jersey! LOL
Thanks Richard, I usually go to Ship Bottom right next to Surf City! But Beach Haven has the amusement park!!
Mike, come on up!!
Hey Hal, your Jersey's showing! "down the shore"!! LOL
Jersey is the garden state and I have visited often and I know why it got this nick-name. It is lovely! The free beach days should do the job of attracting more visitors. If I lived closer I would be there too!
;)
Sounds like a good idea to me. We don't need passes or anything for the beach here, but I can see where in a place that you do need one, why not requiring then at certain beaches would draw a crowd.
Free Beach Days - how did I miss that?
I love your "no stinkin badges required" comment. That is the way they should have promoted the Long Beach Island special. I think that would have been perfect.
