It's Official...the 2009 Hurricane Season Has Begun!

It's June1, and the official start of 2009 Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean.

storm (sxc)It's a short process for a tropical storm to become a hurricane but our ocean waters here at the Jersey Shore take some time to warm up enough to sustain a hurricane.  So New Jersey's active hurricane season comes a little later.

As is always the case, the National Hurricane Center has reconfigured one if it's 6 hurricane name lists, and the names for 2009 storms are as follows:

Ana
Bill
Claudette
Danny
Erika
Fred
Grace
Henri
Ida
Joaquin
Kate
Larry
Mindy
Nicholas
Odette
Peter
Rose
Sam
Teresa
Victor
Wanda
The Hurricane Center recycles the lists every 6 years.  Names are removed and replaced if a storm was particularly devastating.

In 2003, the last time this list was used, Fabian, Isabel and Juan were retired.  On last year's list, which will be used again in 2014, three names were retired.  They are Gustav, Ike and Paloma.  Those names will be replaced with Gonzalo, Isaias and Paulette.

Hey you, here is a picture of last year's storm Laura! I only have it because my daughter's name is Laura and she now uses this as the wallpaper on her desktop.....Fortunately, it was only a tropical storm that never really hit land....

I see I am on the list...I am just a blow hard, but no stamina...The storm will be the same!

Dear Laura,

I am still not on the list. Boo Hoo! Growing up in Clear Lake (a city annexed by Houston) many years ago we got our fair share of hurricanes. Mom mom told me I slept through Carla and had no idea it ever happened. ha ha!  Hopefully this year the storms will be mild, as people are still recovering from Ike, and Rita.

;)

Hey Laura...I didn't realize they pre-determined the whole list of names before the season started; I knew they went in alphabetical order, but I guess I just thought they named them as they came. Interesting. I hope y'all don't get any particularly bad ones this season!

Have a great day,

Anne Rains

Hi Laura - great info - I was wondering how often the names come around again, lol.    I'm praying for a SAFE season :)

Have a good night

When Claudette and Fred arrive, I know I'll be thinking of "The Everly Brothers" and "I Love Lucy." Maybe MTV will bring back some good music and TV Land will bring back some good sitcoms. LOL
