Founder's Day at the Tuckerton Seaport-New Exhibits Open May 1st!
If you're not shopping for a new home in Little Egg Harbor or Tuckerton this weekend, why not visit the Tuckerton Seaport Founder's Day & Open House!
The Seaport on Sunday, May 1st holds an Open House to highlight its new exhibits for 2011.
One of the big exhibits at the Tuckerton Seaport is the display celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the Barnegat Bay Sneakbox. The first Sneakbox boat is generally thought to have been built in 1836 by Captain Hazelton Seaman of West Creek. The Captain was not only a boat builder, but an expert water foul hunter.
The Barnegat Bay Sneakbox was conceived as a low profile boat, designed to travel over the water not through it. It's able float and maneuver in shallow water, and able to handle whatever weather New Jersey can throw at it. There are now two styles of Sneakbox boats; the original which serves as a floating duck blind when covered with sedge or marsh grass and the racing Sneakbox.
If you'd like to see some Barnegat Bay Sneakbox boats, they'll have 50 on display at the Tuckerton Seaport beginning May 1st.
And if you'd like more on the Barnegat Bay Sneakbox Boat, I think the best historical account was written by Nathaniel H. Bishop in 1839. It's called 'Four Months in a Sneak-Box' and is a free read on line.
