Eagleswood to Move Municipal Court

Cost Saving Consolidation

Eagleswood Township (West Creek) in southern Ocean County aims to save taxpayers money by moving its Municipal Court operations to Little Egg Harbor (LEH). It will still be the Eagleswood Municipal Court, but it will be located at 655 Radio Road in Little Egg.

Little Egg Harbor Municipal Building

This follows pleas from Governor Corzine for municipal consolidation and a study by the Eagleswood Committee.

After determining the costs of bringing the Eagleswood Court up to new safety codes, hiring a new court clerk and the annual loss of more than $40,000 annually in the operating budget, the Eagleswood Committee began working with Little Egg Harbor on a ‘shared services agreement’.

All Eagleswood municipal court functions are expected to transfer to Little Egg Harbor by the first of the year. The agreement calls for LEH to receive all fines levied by the Eagleswood Court, while Eagleswood would receive money from a surcharge proposed by Governor Corzine. The surcharge program hasn’t yet been finalized.

Eagleswood comprises nearly 19 square miles in southern Ocean County. It has more than 16 square miles of land and about 2.5 square miles are water covered. It’s population is about 1500.

The Township already has a ‘shared services agreement’ with Stafford Township (Manahawkin) for building inspections. Homes for sale in Eagleswood

Visiting Southern Ocean County...Parkway Info

Traveling on the NJ Parkway this Weekend?

We’re used to traffic at the Jersey Shore, it increases Memorial Day and continues through Labor Day.

There are two heavy traffic days off season, one in the spring (Mother’s Day) and one this weekend, Thanksgiving!

To make your drive safe and easy, remember…

· The speed limit on the Garden State Parkway is 65 mph. But between Exits 80 and 100 the speed limit is only 55. Lower limits around construction areas should be expected.

· Keep right except to pass.

· Tolls on the Parkway vary and maybe 35-cents or 70-cents. There tolls at some exit booths and are generally 25-cents.

· When you come to a toll booth, remember RED coded booths can give change and receipts, BLUE booths are exact change only, and PURPLE booths are for E-Z Pass holders.

· Call 732-PARKWAY for reports on current traffic conditions and weather advisories.

· Buckle up and put that cell phone away. Talking or texting and being unbelted are primary offenses in New Jersey. That means you’ll be pulled over and ticketed even if you’re doing nothing else wrong.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Robbing Peter to Paul Paul?

Economic Stimulus in New Jersey?

The New Jersey Senate has given final approval to a package of bills, touted as an economic stimulus package for New Jersey and its struggling businesses. The proposals were called for in Governor Corzine's recent economic address to the Legislature. The Governor is expected to sign those bills quickly.

signing (sxc)

Two bills, amended in Senate Committee and approved yesterday, now head to the Assembly for approval.

The $25 million Mortgage Stabilization Program and the $15 million NJ Housing Assistance and Recovery Program will now be considered by the state Assembly.

modification (sxc)

The Mortgage Stabilization program will bring lenders and the state together to modify mortgages so they’re more affordable. It will also make available loans of up t $25,000 that would require repayment. According to the NJ Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA), that will help between 1,500 and 2,500 homeowners on a first come, first served basis.

$ (sxc)

Under the NJ Housing Assistance and Recovery Program, certified community organizations will receive state funds to enter into lease-purchase agreements with struggling homeowners. The organizations will purchase the property and rent it back to the current homeowner at an affordable rate for up to three years. The property would then be sold back to the homeowners when they are financially ready.

housing crisis (sxc)

These bills were to be financed by a $2,000 foreclosure charge. Initially the Governor wanted banks to pay a fee for each foreclosure. Instead, the legislation now calls for funding from a $650 million account that was set aside to pay down some of the state’s debt.

While, I’ll be the first to admit New Jersey’s got problems I’m not convinced we’re headed in the right direction.

debt (sxc)

Of particular concern is a delay in paying down the state debt. We already have the third highest debt to income ratio in the country.

Will these measures help New Jersey’s struggling homeowners? Only time will tell, but I’m not banking on it.

What is that in Tuckerton, NJ?

A Statue Stands in Tuckerton, NJ!

When I first moved back to southern Ocean County many years ago, the statute in the middle of Tuckerton was always a bit of a mystery to me.

It sits on a small island on Route 9, where the state highway and Great Bay Boulevard intersect, in between the Tuckerton Seaport and Lake Pohatcong.

The statue is a tribute to those who gave their lives in World War I, and was erected by the Improved Order of the Red Men.

Here’s a little background on this very old fraternal organization…

The Improved Order of Red Men is a patriotic fraternity chartered by Congress. It is a non-profit organization devoted to inspiring a greater love for the United States of America and the principles of American Liberty.

Its origin dates back to 1765 and is descended from the Sons of Liberty. These patriots concealed their identities and worked "underground" to help establish freedom and liberty in the early Colonies.

They patterned themselves after the great Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic governing body. Their system, with elected representatives to govern tribal councils, had been in existence for several centuries.

After the War of 1812 the name was changed to the Society of Red Men and in 1834 to the Improved Order of Red Men.

They kept the customs and terminology of Native Americans as a basic part of the fraternity. The Improved Order of Red Men (IORM) is similar in many ways to other major fraternal organizations in the United States.

The New Jersey area has 5 Red Men Councils in Tuckerton, Egg Harbor, Hammonton, Somers Point and Newark, Delaware.

NJ, NY, CT Want Finance Industry Employee Bailout!

Where Does It End? (My Rant!)

First we bailout financial institutions, the auto makers see a good thing and want to jump on the gravy train…Now the Governors of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut want the feds to bail out thousands of financial industry workers who are loosing their jobs!

Fishing for $ (sxc)

 This is incredible!

The three Governors have asked for $48 million in emergency grants, allowing states to give each laid off worker $12,500 to help them find jobs and relocate. Pardon me, but what are these guys smoking?

In a letter to the US Labor Secretary, Governors Corzine (NJ), Rell (CT) and Paterson (NY), said “The federal government acted swiftly to implement strategies to stabilize financial institutions; now it is to act together to support the workers dislocated from those institutions.”

You've got to read this!

Where do I buy a ticket for a ride on this train?

Changes Proposed to NJ Pinelands Development!

Pinelands Development Changes Proposed!

Pinelands (NCTC)

For the first time in 28 years, the New Jersey Pinelands Commission is considering realignment of Pinelands zoning boundaries.

The Pinelands National Reserve in New Jersey was created by Congress under the National Parks and Recreation Act of 1978. It is the first National Reserve in the nation and covers more than 1 million acres in 7 NJ counties.

In 1979, under the guidance then Governor Brendan Byrne, the Pinelands Preservation Act was adopted. It’s a state and federal partnership to preserve, protect and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Pine Barrens. All or parts of 56 New Jersey municipalities are in the Pinelands National Reserve and are subject to Pinelands Commission regulations.

License Plate

While the proposed changes to the land use maps will not draw the debate witnessed in 1979, which pitted builders and property owners against environmentalists, there are likely to be some disagreements.

According to the Pinelands Commission most of the proposed changes would affect the borders between forest area – the second most restrictive area – and rural development areas, where more construction and land uses are allowed.

Meadowedge Park

The possible changes in Ocean County are considered minor and would be made mostly around land already purchased for conservation and cooperatively rezoned for less growth by the Commission and municipal officials. One of those areas is Cloverdale Farm in Barnegat.

Atlantic County, on the other hand, might see thousands of acres in Egg Harbor Township and Hamilton Township (Mays Landing) converted to the strictly regulated forest area from rural development and regional growth area.

The inner core of the Preservation area will not change, as outlined in the NJ Pinelands Preservation Act of 1979.

The maps of the proposed changes are available and public hearings are expected early next year (2009).

The Worldwide Importance of the NJ Pinelands…

This internationally important ecological region is 1.1 million acres in size and occupies 22% of New Jersey's land area. It is the largest body of open space on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard between Richmond and Boston and is its aquifers contain 17 trillion gallons of some of the purest water in the land.

world map (sxc)

In 1983 the area was designated a U.S. Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO an agency of the United Nations and in 1988 it was recognized as a International Biosphere Reserve.

Today, with the Pinelands Comprehensive Management Plan, the region is protected in a manner that maintains its unique ecology while permitting compatible development.
